Krabi Thailand

My Krabi, Thailand Journey

By: iamAldonLopez |May 12, 2019

Krabi is indeed one of the most desired tourist destinations in Thailand because it offers inshore picturesque attractions including mountains, caves, waterfalls, and chances for bird watching, trekking, and eco-tours. Aside from that, Krabi also has over 200 islands to hop in. So, it requires a lot of travel as the location of each tourist spots are situated away from one to another. It means you can also be a hostel or hotel hopper. Do not just stay in one place if you are planning to visit all the tourist spots when you get to Krabi.

Krabi Town

This place is situated on the west coast of southern Thailand at the mouth of the Krabi River. Krabi Town is the capital of Krabi Province and Krabi District. This town is quite laid back compared to Ao-Nang and Railay and other places close to this town. It also closes to temples such as Wat Kaew and Wat Thum Sua also known as Tiger Cave or the land of miracles. Krabi town has a lot of hotels and hostel to choose from but I recommend you book your stay at Pak Up Hostel as it’s the best hostel I been into. Also, when it comes to food. Of course, Krabi is part of Thailand which means, there is no shortfall of restaurants and street food.

Temples in Krabi Town

If temples are included in your list when travelling to Thailand. Then, don’t miss these 2 major temples in Krabi:

Wat Kaew Korawaram

This Buddhist temple is located on a hill above the city’s downtown. It just on the main streets and a grand staircase line by 2 nāga sculptures. This is one of the largest temples in Krabi but it’s not as famous as Wat Tham Sua.

Wat Tham Sua (Tiger Cave)

This Buddhist temple is situated in the northeast of Krabi, Thailand. It is known for the tiger paw prints in the cave, tall Buddha statues and the strenuous flight of stairs to reach the summit. This temple has an uphill view which previously consists of 1,237 steps but recently updated with a rebuilt section and now has 1,260 steps towards the summit. At the top of the mountain, there is a huge golden Buddha statue. This statue can be seen from the shrine at the top of the stairs. I attempted twice to climb up the summit. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to reach the top as I was really exhausted.  I only reached 292 steps on my first try and then 587 steps on my second attempt. If you ask me why? Well, probably because I’m not used to climbing using stairways. I easily get tired whenever this instance happens. I used to climb mountains without having a problem reaching the top as long as it is not stairways. In fact, I was able to climb the viewpoint of Railay after my attempt on this tiger cave temple.

Railay, Phra Nang, Beach and Ton Sai, Diamond Cave

Railay beach is a large foreland between the city of Krabi and Ao-nang in Thailand. It is reachable only by boat due to high limestone cliffs cutting off mainland access. This area attracts rock climbers from all over the world because of its cliffs, but this is also popular due to its beautiful and quiet relaxing atmosphere but less pristine beaches. If you are planning to visit here this month until November, please be aware of jellyfish as there’s plenty of them during this season. The east of Railay beach is covered in impenetrable of mangroves and unsuitable for swimming. This area is loud during the night as there are many restaurants, bars along the waterfront. West Railay on the other hand, is the primary destination for beachgoers. It is connected to the east side by paths through the large resorts or by trails through thin jungle cover. West Railay beach also has a short walkway lined with restaurants and shops. Ton Sai is the diamond cave, which features a promenade into its depths. At the southern end of the walkway, there is access to a public trail that zigzags under overhanging limestone cliffs and provides access to Phra Nang beach. I had so much fun on this adventure because I was able to meet new people from across the world who became my instant friends. We had so much fun filming and taking some photos for the gram.

Ao-Nang Beach and Market

Ao Nang is a central point of the coastal province of Krabi, Thailand. It is dominated by pubs, restaurants, shops, hotels, and resorts for tourists. The main beach is used by sunbathers to a definite extent, but there are numerous of long-tail boats which offer access to other beaches on the mainland and on nearby islands. From Krabi to Ao Nang beach, you can take the minibus for only 60 baht. This place is the opposite of Krabi town if you want to have a lively night. Then, I recommend you this place to stay. They also have a great massage on the beach for only 200 baht. I also suggest that you choose to eat at the ‘street food’ restaurant. They really have an amazing and delicious chicken barbecue.

Emerald Pool

This natural pond is situated about 50-Km from Krabi Town or Ao Nang. Emerald Pool (Sra Morakot in Thai) is also popular for swimming in Krabi because of its crystal water. It is fresh and cool with the water supplied from natural streams coming from the hill. What I like this place is that the water’s temperature changes and the watercolor go from light green to turquoise. Although, the pool is not big as it only more than a hundred square meters and about 2 meters deep still it’s nice to swim here especially during the morning. Emerald pool has an entrance fee: 200 baht for foreign and 100 baht for local. Please be aware that the pool area is a bit slippery so make sure you watch your steps all the time. If you are planning to include this in your itinerary when you visit Krabi, Thailand. I recommend you rent a motorbike so you can go early from Krabi or Ao Nang as it becomes too crowded between 10 am to 3 pm. Opening hours are from 8 am to 5 pm.

Ultimately, I had so much fun on this trip especially with the people from Pak Up hostel because every night they had this barbecue party and other games to make sure that all their guest would be able to mingle and get to know each other. Although, I and my travel buddy poppy gee weren’t able to visit the other islands due to heavy rain. We had to cancel our island hopping but still, it was fun, we got new friends from across the world, and we had a great time in Krabi, Thailand.
